freestyle
Hi my name is Martin Duncan I am a chef and own Freestyle, a Dessert Restaurant in Brisbane, Australia. I originally opened in 1996 in Rosalie, a suburb in the west of Brisbane,with quaint wooden cottages known as Queenslanders, this area has an amazing strong sense of community. back then I used to sell fresh flowers, art and my desserts.
All my customers became loyal regulars, most are now good friends, ten years on a developer came along and bought me out so he could level building and put more shops on site. Luckily I had found another site in another hip area of Brisbane, Fortitude Valley, a groovy area close to the city centre with alot of liveband venues, and night life ,with the best bars of the city (well i think so anyway ...)
Emporium is the centre I chose as it has about 40 shops and 10 good restaurants......
In 2006 after trawling the country and loads of dodgy realestate agents saying they had my dream place listed and me dropping everything and fanging it up the highway (being a virgo I had a brief where there had to be a sense of wonder or wow factor on arrival) and of course a list of other things. After looking at loads of dodgy houses, where all or most needed a total refurb or bulldozed, I sometimes didnt even get out of car to look at them. I wanted to be under 2 hours from Brisbane, because I still have to be nearby to support my staff at the restaurant, for our clients, for our corporate team building workshops and art classes, held at Freestyle Escape(which we, my partner and I called the property).
Eventually after about 25000 klicks in my car and nothing worthy... we decided to go with buying land and build our own houses rather than take on something that was going to always annoy us!
The property we eventually purchased ended up being an email alert from realestate.com.au
can you believe it........
On the land....we or should I say some of my friends and I, have planted over 1000 rainforest trees, 250 exotic fruit trees about 18 months ago. Most left at end of the day with blisters ....which they still go on about ..... dont worry they had a yummy boozy lunch at the end .....
since then another 2000 rainforest trees planted
Liz (my interior design friend that helped with houses at Freestyle Escape) and I have planted a herb garden , ...stay tuned more to come......
Next weekend 15th and 16th november ..
we are doing a sculpture workshop with Kate French as our tutor,she does amazing sassy women sculptures ... very excited.....
I had never done anything creative before other than my desserts ,till Di Cannon another scupltor handed me some clay and made me join a class we were holding,she may be tiny but she normally gets her way...
( I was supposed to be cooking, fortunately lunch was sorted )
let me tell you ....it is addictive ,relaxing and the truest form of escapism
maybe i thought i was in Ghost as i really got into it and surprise surprise i ended up with a beautiful sculpture of a women with large breasts ..though i was frequently in trouble with Di for fixating on getting these perfect and too much manipulating hehehehe.....more to come.......
